North America’s Top Emerging Startup Routers
According to a new report, Houston has been ranked No. 1 among North America’s top emerging startup routers ecosystems for the robustness of early-stage funding.
Early-stage funding in the region of Houston totaled $884 billion between the years 2020 and 2022. Early-stage investment typically includes a company’s seeding and series A funding rounds.
With $884 million, Houston is ranked #1 in North America & seventh in the world for early-stage funding. Istanbul, Turkey, takes first place on the global stage. According to Startup Genome, this section of the rankings is home to the fundraising hubs dubbed “Strong Starters.”
Startup Genome’sGenome’s report on startup ecosystems for 2023 emphasizes that early-stage funding ” is an essential indicator of potential success,” as most startups receiving series A funding have demonstrated their potential by making money, creating a minimum viable product, or getting ready to launch.
Based on Startup Genome’s global ranking of emerging startup ecosystems, Houston has dropped from No. 5 to No. 11 this year. There is no explanation given for the drop in the report. Copenhagen, Denmark, dominates this category.
Houston, despite its decline in global rankings, still makes this year’s list of North America’s top five emerging ecosystems:
- Detroit’s standing is the same as it was this time last year.
- The Research Triangle of North Carolina (up two spots from last year)
- In comparison to previous years, Minneapolis has fallen one place.
- The Houston area (down one spot from last year)
- The Suns of Phoenix, who moved up two spots from last season.
Based on startup exits and valuations from the second half of 2020 to the end of 2022, Startup Genome estimates the value of Houston’s startup ecosystem at $22 billion.
In a report released by the Greater Houston Partnership in 2022, more than 60 organizations are located in the Houston area that promotes startup growth. It includes incubators, accelerators, co-working spaces, maker spaces, college and university programs, and nonprofit initiatives.
The report noted that these organizations have developed a growing network of resources to assist tech entrepreneurs in the Houston area.
Among the top startup ecosystems in the world, Silicon Valley once again tops Startup Genome’s list, followed by New York City and London (tied at No. 2),Fourth is Los Angeles, and fifth is Tel Aviv, Israel.
According to Startup Genome, a startup ecosystem is a collection of resources within a 60-mile diameter of a central site. These resources include accelerators, incubators, funding groups, co-working spaces, schools, and policymakers.
