Biden falls on stage during Air Force graduation ceremony
In a video, Biden, who delivered the commencement address and remained on stage for a couple of hours, was seen tripping and falling. An Air Force official helped him and pointed to a sandbag that appeared to have caused his fall.
The President tripped and fell onstage during Thursday’s graduation ceremony at the Air Force Academy in Colorado after shaking hands with graduates for nearly two hours.
The President fell to the ground after stumbling over a black sandbag while walking across the raised platform. He was quickly helped to his feet and did not appear injured. The President sat behind the lectern at the ceremony and left the stage shortly afterward, jogging to his motorcade.
A Secret Service agent and an Air Force officer helped Biden back to his feet after he fell near the podium while delivering the commencement address and shaking hands with graduates.
When the President, 80, was upright, he walked away unaided. During the remainder of the ceremony, he stood and welcomed people.
It appeared that he tripped on a black sandbag being used to steady his teleprompter, according to pool reporters traveling with him.
“He’s fine. A sandbag was on stage while he was shaking hands,” White House communications director Ben LaBolt tweeted.
After the hourslong commencement, Biden did not take questions as he boarded Air Force One.
According to reporters traveling with Biden, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also said Biden is “totally fine” on Air Force One.
In response to reporters’ questions, Biden said, “I got sandbagged!” as he returned to the White House. While he didn’t say anything further, he did some footwork before walking inside to show he was feeling OK.
